戦後７６年、日米安保条約署名から６２年を経た現在、日米同盟は我が国の外交・安全保障の基軸であり、インド太平洋地域、そして世界の平和と繁栄の基盤です。
日米間で脈々と続いてきた草の根レベルの交流は、両国の国民の幅広い相互理解と信頼の基礎であり、今日の両国の強固な関係の構築に重要な役割を果たしてきたと考えています。５月に行われた私とバイデン大統領との会談においても、相互の交流及び協力の重要性を強調しました。
財団法人ジョン万次郎ホイットフィールド記念国際草の根交流センターが、コロナ禍においても、オンラインで日米間の様々な交流を継続されてきたことを心強く思います。同センターの長年にわたる御尽力に敬意を表するとともに、益々の御活躍及び御発展をお祈りいたします。

Congratulations to the John Manjiro-Whitfield Commemorative Center for International Exchange for your outstanding work to strengthen the bonds of friendship between the American and Japanese people.

The annual America-Japan Grassroots Summit serves as a valuable bridge between our two nations. While security and economic cooperation capture the media headlines, bringing our two people together underlies and makes possible every U.S.-Japan partnership. In these challenging times, when some nations seek to challenge the international system that protects our shared values and principles, programs like the Summit are more important than ever before.

As a former mayor I appreciate that the Grassroots Summit creates and strengthens connections between cities and regions in Japan and the United States. Such subnational diplomacy is essential if we are to solve the increasingly complex challenges of the 21st century.

The Center for International Exchange has my best wishes for many more years of continued success.

ジョン万次郎・ホイットフィールド記念国際交流センターの皆様、日米両国民の友好の絆を深めるための優れた活動に対し、心よりお祝い申し上げます。

毎年開催される日米草の根交流サミットは、日米両国の貴重な架け橋としての役割を果たしています。安全保障や経済協力がメディアの見出しを飾る一方で、日米両国民の交流はあらゆる日米パートナーシップの根底にあり、それを可能にしています。 私たちが共有する価値観や原則を守る国際システムに挑戦しようとする国があるこの困難な時代において、このサミットのようなプログラムはかつてないほど重要なものとなっています。

元市長として、グラスルーツサミットが日米の都市と地域のつながりを築き、強化してくれていることに感謝します。 21世紀のますます複雑化する課題を解決するためには、このような地方外交が不可欠なのです。

国際交流センターが、これからも何年にもわたって成功されることをお祈りしております。
